10DLC Throughput Limits: Why Your SMS Gets Throttled

By , Founder of Full Percent Updated 10DLCSMS throughputCarrier limits
Short answer

10DLC throughput is set mainly by your brand's third-party vetting score and campaign type, not by sending history. AT&T limits each campaign to between 75 and 4,500 SMS per minute, T-Mobile caps each brand at 2,000 to 200,000 messages per day, and Verizon relies on content filtering rather than published caps.

What is 10DLC throughput?

Throughput is the rate at which carriers will accept your messages. On 10DLC it is expressed differently by each carrier: AT&T uses messages per minute per campaign, T-Mobile uses a daily cap per brand, and your provider may add its own per-number messages-per-second limit.

The practical question is how long a send takes. At AT&T's 240 messages-per-minute tier, 10,000 messages to AT&T subscribers take about 42 minutes. At the 4,500 tier, the same send takes a little over two minutes. For time-sensitive programs, such as responding to fresh inquiries, that difference matters.

What determines your 10DLC throughput?

Your brand's vetting score and your campaign's use case type set your limits. The score comes from a third-party vet (Aegis or WMC) ordered through The Campaign Registry, and it produces a number from 0 to 100.

This corrects a common misconception: there is no public "trust score" that rises automatically as you send clean traffic. A new, unvetted brand stays at the lowest tier until it buys a vet, and a vetted brand keeps its tier until it is re-vetted. What sending behavior does affect is filtering and enforcement, which can block messages at any tier.

  • Brand vetting score. A standard vet costs $41.50 and an enhanced vet $101.50; an appeal of a standard vet costs $11 (TCR Fees and Pricing, updated August 2026).
  • Campaign use case. Low Volume Mixed and Sole Proprietor campaigns have fixed low limits regardless of score. Special use cases such as Charity, Political, and Social have fixed tiers.
  • Russell 3000 status. Listed companies receive T-Mobile's top tier automatically (Twilio).

What are the per-minute campaign limits?

AT&T sets a messages-per-minute (TPM) limit for each campaign based on a message class tied to your vetting score and use case. Standard campaigns range from 240 to 4,500 SMS per minute.

What are T-Mobile's daily brand caps?

T-Mobile caps the total number of messages a brand can send to T-Mobile subscribers per day, shared across all of that brand's campaigns and numbers. The cap resets daily and ranges from 2,000 to 200,000 for standard brands.

Does Verizon limit 10DLC throughput?

Verizon does not publish fixed per-campaign or per-brand caps for 10DLC. It relies on content-based filtering, so compliant traffic typically delivers without a set rate limit while suspicious content is blocked (Telnyx).

That makes Verizon deliverability a content and reputation question rather than a tier question. The practices in our carrier filtering guide apply most directly here.

Why are your messages being throttled or delayed?

Most slow sends come from hitting a documented limit, not from a hidden penalty. Check these causes in order.

  1. You are unvetted. Without a vet, standard brands sit at AT&T's lowest standard class and T-Mobile's 2,000-per-day cap.
  2. You chose a low-volume use case. Low Volume Mixed and Sole Proprietor campaigns are capped at 75 and 15 SMS per minute on AT&T.
  3. You exceeded the T-Mobile daily cap. Messages over the cap are rejected or queued until the next day, depending on your provider.
  4. Your provider is queuing. Many providers apply per-number or per-account MPS limits and queue excess traffic, which looks like throttling.
  5. Messages are being filtered. Filtered messages fail rather than slow down; check delivery receipts for carrier error codes.
  6. You are unregistered. Since February 1, 2025, unregistered 10DLC traffic is blocked, not throttled (Telnyx).

How do you increase 10DLC throughput?

Order a third-party brand vet, and appeal or re-vet if the score is lower than your business warrants. That is the main lever; sending volume alone does not raise your tier.

  1. Clean up identity data first. Vetting scores reflect how well your legal name, EIN, address, website, and business records line up.
  2. Order a standard vet through your provider once the brand is registered.
  3. Appeal with documentation if the score is low because of a data mismatch.
  4. Choose the right campaign type. If you expect more than low volume, register a standard use case instead of Low Volume Mixed.
  5. Spread large sends. Schedule big campaigns across the day so time-sensitive messages are not stuck behind a bulk queue.

Clean sending practices do not raise your tier, but poor ones can take you off the network. T-Mobile passes through fines such as $10,000 for repeated content violations (Bandwidth, August 2026).

Do more phone numbers increase 10DLC throughput?

No. Adding numbers does not raise carrier limits, because AT&T limits apply per campaign and T-Mobile caps apply per brand, no matter how many numbers carry the traffic.

Spreading the same messages across many numbers to get around limits or filtering is called snowshoeing, and carriers treat it as evasion. T-Mobile lists a $1,000 pass-through fine for long code evasion (Bandwidth, August 2026). Multiple numbers are legitimate when they serve a real purpose, such as local presence in different area codes or separate departments, as long as every number is assigned to the correct registered campaign. If you need more capacity, the fix is a better vetting score or a different campaign type, not more numbers.

How does throughput affect campaign results?

Throughput matters most when message timing affects outcomes, such as replying to a new inquiry within minutes. For weekly promotions, even the lowest standard tier is usually adequate.

Work out your largest single send per carrier, divide by your per-minute limit, and compare that to how quickly recipients need the message. If a send to a fresh inquiry list would take hours, vetting pays for itself quickly. If it takes minutes, focus on content and consent quality instead.

Frequently asked questions

How many texts per second can a 10DLC number send?

Carriers do not set a single per-number rate. AT&T limits each campaign to between 75 and 4,500 SMS per minute depending on vetting score and use case, and T-Mobile caps each brand's daily volume. Your messaging provider may also apply its own per-number messages-per-second limit.

Why is my 10DLC throughput so low?

Most often because the brand is unvetted or the campaign is a low-volume type. Unvetted brands sit at AT&T's lowest standard tier and T-Mobile's 2,000-per-day cap, while Low Volume Mixed campaigns are capped at 75 SMS per minute on AT&T.

How do I increase my 10DLC throughput?

Order a third-party brand vet through your messaging provider. A standard vet costs $41.50 through The Campaign Registry as of September 2026 and produces a 0 to 100 score that sets your AT&T and T-Mobile tiers. If the score seems wrong, fix your identity data and appeal.

Does my 10DLC trust score go up as I send more messages?

No. 10DLC tiers are set by the brand vetting score and campaign type, not by sending history. Clean sending protects you from filtering and fines, but raising your tier requires a new vet or a successful appeal.

What is T-Mobile's daily limit for 10DLC?

T-Mobile caps messages per brand per day: 200,000 for vetting scores of 75 to 100, 40,000 for 50 to 74, 10,000 for 25 to 49, 2,000 for low or unvetted brands, and 1,000 for sole proprietors, according to Bandwidth's August 2026 documentation.
